Baby gibbon brought to Gibbon Rehabilitation Project, Phuket

On 26th October, a baby gibbon was brought to the GRP in Phuket by a couple who had seen her on Patong Beach and bought her from her owner in order to rescue her.  Although this was an act of kindness, and certainly saved the gibbon from a stressful and traumatic life as a photographer’s prop, we don’t encourage anyone to pay money to obtain a gibbon for any purpose – even rehabilitation – as it fuels the trade and may well cause another baby gibbon to be taken from the wild.

Flick, however, has made a vast improvement since arriving at the GRP.  She is a one year old brown female, and is very tiny for her age, most likely through lack of a suitable diet.  When she first came in she was extremely stressed, hugging her blanket and hiding her head underneath it.  She now has a larger cage in our quarantine site and has become much more active, watching the other gibbons around her and playing on her swing.  She still drinks from a bottle, but will learn how to collect water using her hands gradually.  She has a healthy appetite and we hope to be able to reintroduce her to her natural environment one day.
