The Wild Animal Rescue Foundation of Thailand (WARF) is in need of almost everything: equipment, personnel and finances. By being an ecovolunteer for any of WARF's projects you will support the project and WARF's work in two ways: with the rehabilitation and with your donation. You have to be available for at least three weeks. Depending on the duration of your stay, your education and experience, you may participate in the following activities:
Assist the Animal Keepers (preparing food, feeding)
Assist in the research (for instance behavioural research). The way the released gibbons spend their time is observed. Behavioural elements are registered, for instance: territorial behaviour, urinating, threatening behaviour towards the observers, coughing, sneezing, foraging, abnormal behaviour and singing. Special emphasis lies on dominant behaviour, the place of the individuals in the group, explorative behaviour and their behaviour towards people, e.g. the observers.
Building and maintaining the cages.
Daily cleaning of the cages.
Giving talks to tourists, telling them of your experiences and those of the animals at the project as well as enlightening them on the current situation of the wildlife protection in Thailand.
Teaching in your native language to local schools

You will work under the supervision of staff at the project and the management of WARF, learning most things while doing them. If you are only available for four weeks, most of your activities will consist of building or repairing cages, preparing food and showing visitors around. You will only have limited contact with the animals. If you are available for several months you can participate in activities in which you will have closer contact with the animals.
Volunteers who have nearly completed their studies for a degree in for instance biology, ecology, primatology or veterinary science, may be able to do research on behaviour and disease. All research takes place second to your duties at the project and under the supervision of the project manager; you have to be available for at least two months in order to do research. For volunteers with an education in the tourist education or public relations sector it is possible to participate in the further development of the visitors-centre and the "visitors-management". Research condition

It is a six day working week, at variable working hours in a morning shift and an afternoon shift. On your days off (not necessarily on the weekends) you can go sightseeing or visit other parts of Thailand. You can't claim a specific day off or specific activities you would like to do. The needs of the project will decide what has to be done and when. The atmosphere at the centre is informal and relaxed and by mutual agreement many things are possible. The project is developing quickly however and therefore the work that has to be done is changing all the time. You will be scheduled where you are most needed and where your skills can be used to the maximum advantage. Please understand it is sometimes not the idyllic and easy holiday that some people expect, the work can be quite draining, however the rewards of helping in the conservation of this country out weigh any of the momentary hardships.

The project is located on Phuket an island off the south coast of Thailand; it currently houses over seventy gibbons. The aim of this project is the rehabilitation of gibbons back to their natural habitat additionally providing ongoing care to those unsuitable for repatriation, some of which are infected with communicable diseases. Our Sea Turtle and Dugong Conservation at Baan Talae Nork, along the Andaman coastline, in Ranong Province, is being established to work towards the conservation and rehabilitation of Andaman sea turtle and dugong populations in southern Thailand. More information.
Because of the nature of our projects it is necessary to make some conditions for participation:
You must be in good physical condition, be able to walk long distances and be able to tolerate heat
The basic command of English spoken is essential needed.
You must be aged 18 or older
You must be available for at least three weeks
You must be able to work without assistance
You are required to have had all relevant vaccinations for Hepatitis A & B, Tuberculosis (TB), Diphtheria, Rabies, Pertissus, Tetanus and Japanese Encephalitis (and Maleria for Ranong Project) before entering to projects (Vaccination Recommendation)
In the case of oversubscribed registrations, experience will be a criterion for selection. When you register as a couple or a group it does not mean you will definitely work with your partner or group. However, by arrangement many things are possible and our staff can help here. The ecovolunteers that assist the management in their research must have a specific education and must be available for at least two months. Our projects employ people from local community. In the case where there are too many applications, the Thai employees, students and scientists have priority over outside ecovolunteers.
PRICING INFORMATION
For full information and pricing please contact our Volunteering Coordinator
Last minute charge: For bookings within twenty-eight days (including the 28th day) before arrival at the project, an extra, non-refundable last minute charge is applied.
Information on the price you pay: The costs for participating in this project depend on the duration of your stay and the kind of activities. Ecovolunteers who stay for less than eight weeks need relatively more supervision and therefore pay a relatively higher price (including the donation for the project). Ecovolunteers who stay eight weeks or longer invest much of their time in the project. This is why they pay less. A minimum of 75% of the price is directly for the Wild Animal Rescue Foundation, including their organization of the project, your participation and extra support. Only less than 25% is used in advertising the project, printing brochures, maintaining a website, for communication expenses, etc. The amount of money leaked back to other countries is therefore minimal, compared to most travel programs. The donation to WAR is non-restricted and will be used to support the Foundation's overall programming priorities; it is not possible to specify that your donation be used at a specific site.
Participants: A maximum number of twelve participants can be accommodated at the main location.
Flights: Volunteers will have to make their own flight arrangements. We advise you not to make reservations before your participation has been confirmed. Of course you can also plan your participation to the project as part of a bigger journey.
Food: Food in Thailand is good, varied, relatively cheap and easily available. Also the accommodation offers the possibility for preparing food together with the other volunteers. Restaurants, small cafeteria offers a good opportunity to order breakfast or lunch. Alcoholic drinks are expensive. Drinking unboiled water is not to be recommended. Drink only bottled water from bottles with a crown cork.

Passport & Visa: To visit Thailand you need a valid passport. A visa is required. Please check with the Thai Embassy in your country or your national volunteer agency to determine what is required and how you can obtain the necessary documents. For long term volunteers a non-immigrant visa with a three-month validity is required. Your booking agent will supply you with a letter for visa support for the Thai embassy. For volunteers staying longer than three months, they will have to renew their visa in Thailand. The WARF Foundation will assist you in doing so.
Attainability & Emergencies: Modern means of communication like telephone, and email are available at our centres. There are times when the equipment is not operational.
